I'm starting on making Helm's Deep elven armor, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what material works best? Also, I wanted to make a sword similar to Haldir's (or Arwen's), but I have no idea on how to go about making it (what materials, design, etc.). Can anyone give me some ideas?

Hi, welcome to the board,
I used steel for my armour, but my boyfriend is an armourer and is used to working with metal. However, a lot of people have used Fun foam (craft foam) as a basis for their armour and have been very successful with it. It's light and can be moulded with heat. Check out Jedielfqueen's tutorial site, Penwiper's and Optinerd's sites on how to make fun foam elven armour. I'm sure there are topics on this site about Haldirs sword, again check out the tutorial sites for that one. Good luck with your project and keep us updated on it! Steph...(the other one)

Hello Saerwen
I have also created my armour and sword using foam. Funfoam is cool, but if you can get your hands on larger plates like 1 by 0.5 m, you can make a large armour more easily. Suitable foam is sold by Live Action Roleplay suppliers, like www.schatzkammer.de or www.larp.nl if you live in Germany or The Netherlands. My Haldir sword is suitable for Live Action Roleplay and I have used it with a woodelf character. Soon I'll be making Arwen's sword for a contest at a scifi convention in october. This piece will also be usable for LARP |

Thanks for that advice, I went on some of the tutorial pages (guess I should have checked there first), I think I'll probably use the foam method. However, instead of the Helm's Deep armor I've decided to make the second age armor (Gil-galad's to be specific) but I'll keep you posted on how that goes.

I cant seem to find the "gapoxio" anywhere, will just regular apoxie clay work? i found some on sculptingstudio.com and from what i read, its about the same thing (im guessing) anyone else use the standard apoxie clay?
Oh, and ive just cut out the chest pieces and duct taped them, now all i have to do is wait for mannequin to arrive in the mail and then i can get busy |

You have to buy it on line. There's a link to it on the main website, but here you go.
www.miniworlddolls.com/Go...apoxio.htm I don't recommend it for the chest and hips though - it's far too heavy. I don't know if the apoxie clay would work better or not. Let us know how it goes!

If you're making the second age armor, I'd suggest using Sintra plastic. I'm so glad people are still interested in making some of the elven armor. It's truly beautiful stuff and I love seeing everyone's creations. Keep us posted. It's quiet here, but there are some of us still around.

new material | ||

Hello all,
I have done some research and I think I have found some material that could possibly help ease the armor crafting process (by at least a few pieces if not the whole suit) The material is used by EMT's (emergency medical teams) and can be purchased online at this site... www.themedicalsupplydepot.com Once on the site, find the link on the left column that sais EMT/EMS, then click Immobilization, followed by the Alluminum Splint link. This stuff is basically used as a splint. Very mouldable. The only drawback is that its width is only 4 1/2 inches wide, but it comes in several lengths... 9'', 18'', 32'', and 72''. It may be a little more expensive than using the foamies sheets (for those who go that route) but it should be a reasonably good substitute due to the metal reinforcement and ease of shaping. Also, it can be cut by common house scissors, and the foam surrounding the alluminum core should adhere well with other sheets of foamie if you would want to add layers. This is all hypothetical of coarse, but once my order arrives, i will write again with the results. Now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb!

Awesome! Keep us informed. It's always cool to hear about new materials.

HI,
This is a little late, and the person who was looking for Gapoxio may have already found it, but the company does have a Web site if you just Google "Gapoxio". Another place that sells it is Rio Rondo, which specializes in stuff for making horseman miniatures - itsy bitsy buckles, conchos and such. Anyway, good luck to you. Not sure how Gapoxio compares to Apoxie, but I've used it and it's great stuff! Take care, Brighton |
