Sorry I haven't been around much - and I ran out of funds to keep putting into the site to keep it gold.
I'm glad to hear others are still making stuff though!!! I'm working on a Rebel Pilot costume for my soon to be 5 year old... my youngest niece would like to be Princess Leia, so I'll start that as soon as I finish a few outfits for my nieces that are school wear and not costumes...

Julia, if you need help in affording the Gold Membership, just give us a buzz lah. (BTW, yes, I can visit the forum more often if my new baby log in from my room which is......worst than Watto Junkyard!) That's sweet of you to offer eagle! I tried to go into my forum account to make the community chest visible, but whenever I click on to 'community' it logs me out! And when I try to log back in it won't let me.
Grrrrr.... NOW I remember why I gave up on ezboard.

Wow! I doubt if any of you remember me, but I used to hang around here and post some when I was but a wee lad in high school. (Now Im a wee lad well into college.) I'm glad to see everything things are in fact still up and running, after, what, five years? (Even though I did have to renew my account and name. Come to think of it i never even sent in pics of my armor... ) Well, looks like I found something to do!

It seems I have no pictures of my 2nd age armor myself, and it unfortunately did not survive the premier of ROTK. (Plus, I never did get very far on my Helm's Deep armor, and what I had made is long gone) However, I'm gonna e-mail one of my friends and see if they can't turn one up. (I'm sure we had at least a few group pictures.) In the mean time, I am going to contemplate making the Helm's
Deep armor. Begin contemplation: I personally favor vinyl placemats over fun-foam (premade smooth, shiny surface, no messy coats of glue, behaves just like funfoam when working with it, only slightly stronger) so I might try that. I also recently used vinyl floor covering (old linoleum remnants) for a set of Roman lorica segmenta I made this summer. It worked really well until I left it in the car on its hanger in 90+ heat, bad idea, but it also might work for this armor if I can get it to keep its shape. On second thought, it is still frozen in its disfigured form from the car heat so maybe I can use heat to shape it like fun-foam. Hmmm, I'm in the mood to experiment... |

Ooooh nice idea! Never thought of the flooring material... Just might have to play around with that now. Also, welcome back.-J

Re: placemats | ||

Does paint take well to the smooth side of the material? Say.. if you spray painted it? Does it flake off or crease at all?

Re: placemats | ||

Yeah it takes ok to spray paint, but I'm sure it could done better w/ more than one coat and with a primer of sorts (i was on a very tight time schedule, 3 days). It stood up pretty well to everyone petting and touching it all the time, too, though it did get a little faded, but it never chipped or flaked.
P.S. What are you thinkin of making w/ it? I'd really like to know if you come across any limitations that I haven't, and compare notes in general if you start playing around w/ it. Jon |

I remember you, Jon! Welcome back! Has it really been 5 years? Wow.
I too would love to see photos! I have a new computer and I'm still sorting out my files (with very little spare time) so I don't know when I'll be updating anything again, but it would be great to have for the photo page. Julia

Hey thanks Julia!
P.S. Does anyone remember the rumor that used to float around that Peter Jackson was thinking of making The Hobbit? I wonder whatever happened with that... Jon |

Re: placemats | ||

I was thinking about redoing the hip armor on my 2nd age elven armor. I too was hurried for time and couldn't do the proper prep for painting and it's just been kind of a pain in the rear. The chest armor needs to stay tough and I'm okay with it as is, but I wish the hips had more movement. I 'can' sit down in the thing, which is awesome, ...even if it is only enough to get maybe a cheek on seat, but hey! anything right? I have an armoring project that I'm starting to work on from a video game and I might use the roman-style armoring technique, and you mentioned you did something of the nature.. I'm really excited to even just try anything with a whole new approach with a new material. Here's a link to my 2nd Age armor...
www.dotphoto.com/Go.asp?l...891020&T=1 It's made out of garage sale signs(shoulders), some sintra plastic(chest/hips), craft foam (bracers) and some paper mache/wood putty for the helmet. |

Re: placemats | ||

Beautiful work! That really is awesome!
P.S. I've found something new earlier. A Japanese guy makes incredible anime armor from vinyl fabric (I cant quite gather exactly what it is) glued to urethane foam. It looks pretty amazing, and I wonder if that concept could be modified to work for the helm's deep armor. Heres the link to the site I found it through and the place itself (its a rough translation though, it takes some deciphering) amethyst-angel.com/armorm...links.html gaogaygar.fc2web.com/EnglishIndex.htm See what you think Jon |
